Timothy Cheek – May We Talk – Is There a China We Can Converse With?

Please join us on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 to welcome our guest speaker Timothy Cheek.

China has been front and center of public geopolitical discourse in recent times.  We have had two prior presentations covering different aspects of the challenges facing Canada in respect of China.

Dr. Cheek will provide another perspective with his vast knowledge of the Communist Party of China.

Dr. Timothy Cheek is Director of the Institute of Asian Research and Louis Cha Chair  Professor of Chinese Research at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs and Department of History at the University of British Columbia.  His research, teaching and translating focus on the recent history of China, especially the Chinese Communist Party and intellectual debate in China.  In recent years Dr. Cheek has been working with Chinese intellectuals to explore avenues of collaborative research and translation, particularly on new approaches to Party history.

Dr. Cheek holds a Ph.D. in History and East Asian Languages from Harvard University, an M.A. in History from the University of Virginia and a B.A. in Asian Studies from Australian National University.
