Paul Evans – The Cold War with China is On: How Wide, How Deep, How Long? – Evening with Churchill

    September 25, 2024 @ 05:30pm

Please join us on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 to welcome our distinguished guest speaker Dr. Paul Evans.  Paul last spoke to us four years ago.  He will address the Society on “The Cold War with China is On: How Wide, How Deep, How Long?”.  The emergence of China as a global presence is as important to the 21st century as the rise of the United States was in the 20th.  A Cold War with China? What are the dynamics and limits of this new era of strategic competition with China?  Where is Canada positioned?

Paul grew up in Calgary, did his first two degrees at the University of Alberta before completing a Ph.D. in Political Science at Dalhousie University. He taught at York University for fifteen years before spending two years at Harvard University and arriving at UBC in 1999. He has had visiting appointments in Canberra, Taipei, Honolulu, Cambridge (Mass.), Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. At UBC he served as director of both the Liu Institute for Global Issues and the Institute of Asian Research. From 2005 to 2008 he served as Co-CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. In June 2023, he was appointed Professor Emeritus of the UBC School for Public Policy and Global Affairs and retired from teaching at UBC. Paul is the author or editor of eight books and now consults and continues his writing, mainly on Canada-Chinese relations and regional security issues in what is being labelled “the Indo-Pacific” era.

His wife Catherine is a former Vancouver Parks Board Commissioner and now the Chancellor of the Vancouver School of Theology.
