Paul Evans – Has the Cold War with China Begun

October 21, 2020 @ 07:00pm

Please join us on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 to welcome again our guest speaker Paul Evans. Paul last spoke to the Society over 3 years ago. He will address the Society on “Has the Cold War with China Begun?” The emergence of China as a global presence is as important to the 21st century as the rise of the United States was in the 20th. The interaction of Xi Jinping’s China Dream and Donald Trump’s America First has produced a downward spiral that has brought the two countries to the edge of a new kind of Cold War. What are the drivers and ingredients of this grand strategic competition? What does it mean for Canada?

Paul grew up in Calgary, did his first two degrees at the University of Alberta before completing a Ph.D. in Political Science at Dalhousie University.  He taught at York University for fifteen years before spending two years at Harvard University and arriving at UBC in 1999.  He has had visiting appointments in Canberra, Taipei, Honolulu, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore. At UBC he served as director of both the Liu Institute for Global Issues and the Institute of Asian Research where he is now based.  From 2005 to 2008 he served as Co-CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada.  He is the author or editor of 8 books, the most recent of which is Engaging China: Myth, Aspiration and Strategy in Canadian Policy from Trudeau to Harper.  His wife Catherine is a former Vancouver Parks Board Commissioner.
