Churchill and the Muse of History: His Passion for the Past – Michael Shelden

Please join us on Thursday, September 18 to welcome our guest speaker Michael Shelden.

Professor Michael Shelden is the author of four literary biographies including the Pulitzer Prize finalist, Orwell: The Authorized Biography and Mark Twain: Man in White.  His latest biography is a groundbreaking account of the early life of Winston Churchill, Young Titan:  The Making of Winston Churchill. 

Professor Shelden earned his Ph.D. in English from Indiana University in 1979.  He is a Professor of English at Indiana State University.  Michael was a features writer for the London Daily Telegraph and served as a fiction critic for the Baltimore Sun.

He contributed several articles to the Daily Telegraph on notable figures in film, literature and public affairs.  He also did one of the last interviews with actor Christopher Reeves.  Shelden is married and the father of two daughters.  They live in Bloomington, Indiana.

In December, 2012 Tom Brokaw wrote in the Wall Street Journal, “One tip for the New Year:  Don’t miss Michael Shelden’s Young Titan, an account of Churchill’s early years.  Churchill’s life is the gift that keeps on giving.”.  Describing Young Titan as “enthralling”, Geoffrey Wheatcroft wrote in Newsweek that the book was “a vivid portrait of a young man on the make, as ambitious as he was gifted.”.

Limited copies of the book Young Titan will be available for purchase at the event.  Michael says he would be delighted to and will sign books both before and after his presentation.

Cost:               $25 each for a Member of the Society, $35 each for a non-Member

$40 for a Member accompanied by either a spouse, partner or an immediate family member

(The ticket cost includes one beverage ticket per attendee for 1 glass of wine or beer, or for 2 soft drinks.  Additional drinks can be purchased from the bar)
