Mark and Cora Lijek will speak on their experiences in Tehran at the time the U.S. Embassy was overrun. Their talk will reveal the role played by the Canadians in protecting them in Tehran and facilitating their escape.
Mark Lijek was born in 1951 in Detroit to a Polish American father and a Polish mother. Mark attended Seattle Preparatory School. He then attended Foreign Service School at Georgetown University where he met fellow student and future wife, Cora Amburn.
Mr. Lijek served in the U.S. Army and obtained a Masters in Business Administration from American University in Washington, D.C. Lijek joined the Foreign Service in 1978 and his first assignment was in Tehran. Following his return from Tehran, Mark served in the Foreign Service in Hong Kong, Kathmandu, Warsaw and Frankfurt. Following his retirement, he and Cora returned to the Pacific Northwest and reside in Anacortes.
Cora Lijek worked as a consular assistant in the visa unit of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran during the months prior to the Iranian hostage crisis, one of only two family members permitted there. They have two grown children.
