Ambassador William Taylor – Russia’s War on Ukraine: an Update – Evening with Churchill

May 14, 2024 @ 05:00pm

Please join us on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. PDT to welcome our guest speaker Ambassador William Taylor who will speak to us from Washington, D.C. on Russia’s War on Ukraine: an Update.

Ukraine has been holding back Russia’s unprovoked, full-scale invasion for well over two years, an invasion that started with seizure of Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine in 2014.  Despite being outgunned and out-manned, Ukraine’s armed forces have fought the Russians to a standstill on the ground and, without a navy, have pushed the Russian Black Sea fleet out of the western Black Sea.  In late April, the Congress finally passed a large support package that should enable the Ukrainians to continue their defense – and even push the Russians back next year.  What are the prospects for an Ukrainian victory?

William Taylor is an American diplomat, government official, and former military officer.  He served as the 6th United States ambassador to Ukraine from 2006 to 2009 under President Bush and Obama, and as charge d’affaires under President Trump.

Born in New Mexico in 1947, Taylor attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.  He served in the infantry for six years, including 18 months in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War.  In 2015, Taylor was appointed executive vice president of the United States Institute of Peace.  In this role he supported continuing or increasing U.S. sanctions against Russia for its aggressions toward Ukraine.
