Dr. Christopher Harmon – Books Churchill Read: The Self-Education of a Young Statesman

January 19, 2023 @ 07:00pm

Please join us on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. PST to welcome our guest speaker Christopher C. Harmon who will speak on Books Churchill Read: The Self-Education of a Young Statesman.

W. S. Churchill did not attend a university, and he wrote only briefly about his early education and its limits. What printed works did help educate young Churchill and prepare him for his numerous ministerial posts of the early 20 th century? What elements of education played into developing that sparkling personality and precocious worldly view? What was the intellectual evolution of this writer destined for a Nobel Prize in Literature?

Our discussant Christopher C. Harmon is a Professor at the Institute of World Politics in Washington, D.C. His areas of expertise, apart from Churchill studies, include International Relations, Terrorism, and Great Power Competition. His eighth book, Warfare in Peacetime, comes out this year from Marine Corps University Press.

Dr. Harmon has written for Finest Hour as well as The Churchill Project at Hillsdale College. He is a member of the Board of Academic Advisers of the International Churchill Society based in Washington, D.C. His faculty service has included Marine Corps University in Quantico, Virginia, the Daniel K. Inouye Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies and the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.

He resides in Woodbridge Virginia. Seattle was the first home; his parents remain there; Charles Robert Harmon taught courses on Churchill as well as modern warfare while a history professor at Seattle University.
