The Scapa Flow Story – Ian Marshall

    January 20, 2015 @ 05:00pm

Please join us on Tuesday, January 20 to welcome our guest speaker Ian Marshall.

In September of 2013, Ian Marshall and his Scottish-born wife Elizabeth rented a cottage for a week in Scotland’s Orkney Islands on the shores of the famous British anchorage Scapa Flow.  Scapa Flow was the base for the British Fleet during the First and Second World Wars, but Ian will explain that, as a result of its strategic location, Scapa Flow’s role in history started much earlier than the twentieth century. His talk and Power Point presentation will reveal the highlights of a story that covers almost a thousand years from the days of the Vikings until the present day.

Born in England to a Canadian military family, Ian attended elementary school in Ottawa and high school at Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario. After graduating with a B.A. from Carleton University, where he majored in Economics and Political Science, he studied law at Queen’s University in Kingston. Called to the bar in Ontario in 1971 and BC in 1972, Ian practiced law as a corporate counsel for 28 years. After 4 years with the BC Power and Hydro Authority, he worked for more than 23 years at Placer Development Limited and its successor corporation, Placer Dome Inc. While at Placer, he served as Associate General Counsel and Assistant Secretary and negotiated and documented mining deals in 16 different countries. After leaving Placer, he worked as an international business and legal consultant until 2013.

Ian and Elizabeth have been married for 40 years and have two married children. Ian has been a Director of our Society since 2002 and has been Secretary and Chairman of our Society’s Scholarship Committee for 11 years. His interest in travel and history is well known to his friends.
