9/11: Lessons for the Cyber Era – James McFarlin

June 19, 2019 @ 05:00pm

Please join us on Wednesday, June 19 to welcome our guest speaker James McFarlin.  He will address our Society on 9/11: Lessons for the Cyber Era.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 represent the most devastating assault on America’s homeland in its history.  With the generous and unselfish help of its neighbor, friend, and ally Canada, America made it through that day, but not without the loss of more than 3,000 lives and searing memories that will be with the nation forever.

The 9/11 Commission, formed to assess and improve America’s vulnerabilities to future homeland attacks, described the events of 9/11 as one of the greatest intelligence failures in American history and a massive “failure of imagination.”  In the eighteen years since 9/11, global security threats have expanded, challenging imaginations as never before.  The internet has become an increasingly dangerous battlefield where disruptive forces threaten not only the U.S. and Canada but all western democracies.

With Russia, China, and Iran posing ever-threatening cyber risks and more than 29 nations known to be assembling offensive cyber weapons arsenals, crippling attacks far exceeding those of 9/11 have become an ever-present possibility from anyone, anytime, anywhere.  Join cybersecurity authority and author James McFarlin for an engaging discussion on the lessons of 9/11, reminding us of the importance of keeping our memories and our imaginations active and our defenses ready to meet the dangerous realities of today’s global cyber battlespace.

Jim McFarlin is a former U.S. Air Force officer and high-tech CEO, an internationally read author, and an in-demand speaker on cybersecurity, cyberwarfare and cyberterrorism.  With his four decades of experience in the high-tech arena, Jim can describe as few can the rising national security challenges both the U.S. and Canada face today from the ever-increasing threats of cyber conflict.  Jim is a Programs Chair of the World Affairs Council of the Desert in Rancho Mirage, California.  Jim’s popular cyber thriller, “AFTERSHOCK: A Novel,” is available on Amazon and Kindle.
