Terrorism Today – Inside the Charlie Hebdo Story – Ed Vulliamy

 Freedom of Speech and Respect for Religion – Where will Terrorism Strike Next?

On February 24th , we look forward to welcoming our guest speaker Ed Vulliamy, a leading journalist covering international affairs, who earlier this month spent a week in Paris for the Manchester Guardian covering the Charlie Hebdo story.  Thanks to Dr. Andre Gerolymatos, Director of Hellenic Studies at SFU, Ed will be in Vancouver speaking to the students of SFU on terrorism and will join our Evening with Churchill on the above-mentioned topic after his SFU appearance.

Ed Vulliamy is an award winning British journalist and author.  He graduated from University College School and Hertford College, Oxford before becoming a journalist.  In the 1990s, Ed reported extensively for the Guardian on the war in Bosnia and in 2001, covered the 9/11 attacks while living in New York.  At the outbreak of the current war in Iraq in March 2003, he was one of the first reporters on the ground.  Ed won Granada Television’s Foreign Correspondent of the Year Award for 1992 and was named Foreign Reporter of the Year in 1993 and 1997. In 2013, he was awarded the coveted Kapuscinski Award for Literary Reporting.

Dr. Andre Gerolymatos is Professor of History and Director of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies at SFU.  He completed his undergraduate studies at Loyola College and Concordia University and his Masters and Doctorate in History at McGill. His latest book is In The Middle East published in 2010.  Andre serves as a member of the Canadian Advisory Council on National Security.  Questions on Terrorism will be answered by Ed and Andre after the formal presentation.

Cost:                $25 each for a Member of the Society, $35 each for a non-Member

$40 for a Member accompanied by either a spouse, partner or an immediate family member

(The ticket cost includes one beverage ticket per attendee for 1 glass of wine or beer, or for 2 soft drinks.  Additional drinks can be purchased from the bar)
